Florida County Court: Jurisdictional Changes

County Court

With the new year coming, it is important to take note of what changes are happening in your jurisdiction. The following information is a brief summary of Florida county court jurisdictional changes beginning with the new year.

What is changing?

As of January 1, 2023, the limits for a county civil case will increase from $30,000 to $50,000. Furthermore, a 2020 provision stating that appeals of county court orders or judgments with amounts in controversy over $15,000 would be heard by district courts of appeal has been repealed. If you have a pending appeal and are unsure of what this means for your case, speak with your attorney about any questions or concerns you might have.

What is not changing?

Some factors, however, are not changing in the new year. For instance, there are no changes to filing fees, and the $8,000 limit for small claims still applies. Furthermore, civil cover sheets are still required when filing complaints. Civil cover sheets include basic information about the case, such as the parties involved, the type of case, and what type of relief the plaintiff (the party filing suit) is seeking.

Monitor your court.

Due to these changes, it is recommended that you continuously monitor your jurisdiction’s website(s) to see if any other information is updated or changed as of January 1, 2023.
