EPGD Law Shining Star: Raquel Hickey

The Headshot

If you’ve been to any #CoralGablesChamber event, it’s likely that you’ve had a conversation with our #EPGDShiningStar, Raquel Hickey, publisher of Gables Living!

As a friend of the firm, we reached out and asked her some questions so that our audience could get to know her on a more personal level.

But first, about her professional world…

Raquel is a long-time member of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, in fact this month she celebrates a 26-year anniversary. Up until December of 2015, Raquel spent 33 years as a career Banker, beginning on Brickell, Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables and South Miami at many prestigious and well known financial institutions. Besides most recently serving on the Chamber Board, she has held several Vice Chair positions through her years of service and has been a South Miami Rotarian since 1998.

With the banking industry in turmoil, filled with mergers and acquisitions, in 2016 she worked for Alfalit International as she looked for a new calling. She came across the Best Version Media concept of neighborhood publications and when the Coral Gables market was available, she jumped at the opportunity. As a multifaceted professional with experience in sales, leadership, management and strong networking skills, she felt she could put all her skills to use and become an entrepreneur. With Gables Living, Raquel does just that and provides solutions for clients through networking via print media by connecting businesses to affluent buyers.

This is our favorite part!

1. What, or who, are you a “closet” fan of?
Madonna, I grew up with her music and was a fan from the very beginning. What impressed me about her was her drive, determination to make it AND make it her way! She was bold, a bit brash sometimes BUT a true trailblazer as a young woman making it on her own. I truly believe she opened the door for current music stars like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Miley Cirus just to name a few…

2. What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?
I love to read People Magazine from cover to cover, look forward to receiving it every week!

3. Name two things you consider yourself to be very good at.
Networking – connecting people and Creativity – thinking out of the box Can I add a third? I’m a great cook, told by many…. (I know I still owe you a completa!) ???? (Editors note: She has an impeccable memory!)

4.What’s a favorite family memory that has stuck with you into your adult life? Why?
Social gatherings with family and friends at my home, my parents were always hosting friends and family on weekends and holidays filled with great food, drink and conversation. It taught me to be comfortable around all types of people/adults, be welcoming, engage in conversation and the importance of building tight bonds with people you know.

5. What would you do with your “15 minutes” of fame?
Bring focus to a cause or charity….I support a few, so I would have to seriously think about which one I would choose…

6. Have you ever won anything? What was it?
I’ve won several items through the years from raffles and door prizes, so I will only mention the largest. When the Gables Chamber had membership drives, I won a NCL cruise for being the top seller. I also won a cruise at a golf tournament raffle/door prize.

7. What’s your most significant current challenge?
Continuing the transitioning from a long banking career to an entrepreneur in a field that is completely new to me and keeping focused on making Gables Living the premier publication for all Coral Gables residents BUT I am a networker, creative, and resilient so it will happen!

Raquel is a standout and well-connected member of the community. If you have not had a chance to sit down with her and chat over coffee, you’re missing out. If you’d like to contact Raquel directly, she may be reached at rhickey@bestversionmedia.com.
